Owned and run by the Beale family, this lodge situated on the banks of the Futaleufu River offers accommodation for up to eight anglers and fly-fishing for brown and rainbow trout (plus the occasional salmon) in a comfortable and intimate setting. A good option for those travelling to Patagonia with non-fishing partners.

The fishing

The majority of fishing here is done on the Futaleufu River. Also known as the Rio Grande, this is not to be confused Tierra del Fuego’s river of the same name. The expert local guides are fluent in both English and Spanish, and all have encyclopaedic knowledge of the waters around the lodge. Under their supervision, you can expect to find trout between 14 and 18 inches, with bigger ones not uncommon. You may also run into the odd native perch and king salmon closer to the end of the season. The fishing season here runs from November 1st until May 1st.

The facilities

The lodge itself sits right on the banks of the Futaleufu River just five miles from the border with Chile. Accommodating up to eight anglers, the lodge has an authentic, family feel to it – meals include home-baked breads and vegetables picked from the garden served up with fine Argentinian wines. There’s also satellite internet at the house. For non-fishing companions, activities such as horse-back riding, half-day trips to Chile and rafting on the Futaleufu River can be organised.

Rates

$530 per day ($320 for non-anglers)
