Dove Creek Lodge – Key Largo, Florida
The Florida Keys isn’t exactly awash with dedicated fishing lodges, but Dove Creek Lodge is about as close you’ll get – this pretty 21-room property in Key Largo (Mile Marker 94.5), provides the full spectrum of accommodation options (from rooms to luxury suites) and works with a range of local guides and charters who can take care of your fishing needs.
The fishing
Pretty much everything is covered at Dove Creek – if you’ve got your own boat, you can dock it in the marina; if not, the folks at the lodge will happily hook you up with a local skipper.
Offshore sport is excellent, with target species including sailfish, dorado (mahi-mahi), wahoo, king mackerel and tuna, while reef fishing for grouper and snapper is also productive. Remember, you can always have your catch cooked for you at Snapper’s Restaurant (next door) when you return after a successful day.
The backcountry and flats fishing around Key Largo and the Upper Keys is also legendary. This is the home of big bonefish and permit – they’re hard to catch, but there are few better places to chase them. Also within easy reach are the Everglades, where you’ll find redfish, snook and tarpon.
The facilities
Dove Creek has 21 rooms in total with a range of options, from classic rooms up to luxury suites. All are spacious and come with tropical furnishings, well-appointed bathrooms, private balconies, DVD players, plasma TVs and DSL.
There’s an on-site swimming pool and Snapper’s Restaurant (one of the best restaurants in the area) is right next door. Other activities can be easily arranged, including kayaking, eco tours, snorkelling and diving.
