The fishing

Deep Water Cay is a nothing short of a Bahamas institution. Just look at the roll-call of previous guests: Joe Brooks, Curt Gowdy, Ray Bergman, Stu Apte, Flip Pallot, Lefty Kreh, Chico Fernandez and Sandy Moret, to name just a few.

The reason for that is the huge, relatively unpressured fishing grounds – 250 square miles of flats, many of them hard-packed white sand flats with easy-to-spot, big bonefish, not to mention an infinite number of channels and some saltwater lakes hidden within the mangroves.

A three-hour tide difference between the east and the west ends of Deep Water Cay allows for more prime-time fishing, and if your day on the water isn’t enough, there’s always the flat in front of the infinity pool where you can cast to tailing fish in the evening sun.

The facilities

The front porch of each cabana overlooks a bonefish flat, and all come with with a refrigerator, coffee maker, walk-in closet and air conditioning.

Private homes are also available, including full kitchens, sitting and living rooms, dining areas, and wrap-around verandas.

The clubhouse is the focal point of the lodge – here you can eat, drink, play pool, relax in the great room, or make use of the fly-tying station and free Wi-Fi. Beyond that, there’s an infinity pool, beach with tiki bar, gym and the Barracuda Grill. And if the stress all gets too much, a massage can easily be arranged.

The island features its own private air strip.
