The fishing

With Captain Tom Yust, you’re in safe hands. With over 25 years’ experience as a guide, and having been fishing these waters since 1991, he’s taken the time to work out the unique logistics and techniques that help you get the best out of your time here. His 31’ Bertram and 22’ Mako are both fully-equipped with top-of-the-range tackle and everything else you’ll need for a comfortable day on the water.

As for the fish, the variety of species available is staggering in this part of the world. The waters around Coiba Island, including the Hannibal Bank, are some of the most productive marlin fishing areas in Panama or anywhere else in the world. This is a year-round black-marlin fishery, with January-June fish averaging 400-500lbs and July-December bruisers weighing in at an average 600-800lbs. On top of that, the inshore action is blistering, with roosterfish, wahoo, cubera snapper and yellowfin tuna all in abundance.

The facilities

A truly all-inclusive service is offered by the folks at Coiba Adventure Sportfishing. Accommodation is offered at what was originally Club Pacifico (a famous fishing lodge built by Bob Griffin) in air-conditioned, comfortable cabins.

The folks at Coiba recommend you don’t bring much either: “We provide all the tackle and booze. You only need a few changes of clothing, sunglasses, camera, iPod & personal items. You should be able to fit it in one soft sided bag. We will wash your clothes when you need it. We won’t charge you for it either.”

And if you insist on bringing your phone, don’t bother to turn it on – cell phones don’t work and there’s no email. There’s a satellite phone for emergencies, but that’s it. This is a truly away-from-it-all destination, where the focus is on fishing and having fun. And as the Coiba folks only cater for private groups, you call the shots on what you eat and drink while you are there. “Just let us know what you like and we will do our best to have it here for you. Otherwise plan on breakfast to order, Budweiser & sandwiches on the boat, top shelf open bar, appetizers and fresh-caught fish dinners and dessert. You won’t reach for your wallet the entire time you are in our care, except to tip the crew when it’s time to return from where you came.”
