The fishing

Whether you’re a saltwater or freshwater fly-fishermen (or even both), there’s something for everyone in this part of Ireland.  Some of Kerry’s finest (but inexpensive) salmon and sea trout rivers are a short drive from Cloghvoola. You’ll fish the Caragh, Laune, Cummeragh, Currane and Inny with ghillies who have up to 40 years’ experience of these rivers. Then there are the loughs: Currane, Isknagahiny, Derriana, Namona, Cloonaghlin, and all the other hill loughs of the Waterville system. Salmon, sea trout and brown trout abound throughout the system.

Thanks to some sensible protection orders and wise stewardship on the part of Ireland’s fishermen, bass stocks in inshore coastal waters are incredibly healthy; North Kerry’s Dingle Peninsula and South Kerry’s Iveragh Peninsula offer some of the best shore fishing for bass in Europe. There are miles of beaches and innumerable rocky outcrops just a short drive from Cloghvoola. Fly-fishing and lure tactics will both produce.

Lodging & facilities

Farmhouse accommodation is included as standard, with a private bedroom and bathroom. In the best of Irish traditions, Roger and Val pride themselves on their hospitality, inviting guests to “share the home and dining table as members of the family”.

Aside from fishing, canoeing, sailing, diving and horse-riding are all available, and the nearby Waterville Golf Course is rated as one of Ireland’s finest. Other nearby sites include the Skellig Islands (a 6th-century settlement for Christian monks), and Ballinskelligs Abbey, an Augustinian Priory.
