The Las Salinas destination on the south coast of Cuba in the Zapata National park is a hidden gem – a closely-controlled flats fishery allowing access to only a handful of anglers at any one time. Trips can now easily be arranged there, incorporating a stay at the nearby Hotel Play Larga.

The fishing

Having (until relatively recently) spent many decades closed as a government protected area, the flats of Las Salinas remain largely untouched and unpressured as a fishing destination. Even now only a small numbers of fishermen are allowed in and it genuinely feels like a privilege to be granted access to this wilderness setting.

Each fisherman, accompanied by his own personal guide, will sample a combination of wading on the firm sandy bottom and casting from the skiff. The fishing area is a vast flat divided into many lagoons connected by small channels making this the ideal habitat for flats species. Bonefish, permit, tarpon, jacks, barracuda and other flats species all reside here and it’s common to catch up to 10 bonefish per day. Average weight is 3-6lbs, with the realistic chance of fish in the 10lb class. Only six anglers are allowed within the area at any one time. As a bonus, the nearby River Hatiguanico offers excellent tarpon and snook fishing in season.

Lodging & facilities

Lodging is offered at the nearby Hotel Playa Larga. This hotel was refurbished in 2009 and accommodation is in individual bungalows with new en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning and satellite TV. The hotel has a beach, a beach bar, swimming pool, restaurant and diving school next door.
