The fishing

Buena Vista Sportfishing Lodge has a fleet of four boats – the 26’ Monkey Business, 31’ Furioso, the 37’ Canaso and the 41’ Legacy. All vessels are run by highly skilled crews, all of whom are well versed in every facet of billfishing – whether you want to fish with conventional light tackle or fly gear, these guys make it happen.

As for the fishing itself, the glamour species round these parts is the sailfish. Thanks to a unique marine ecosystem, Guatemala’s waters are home to numbers of sailfish you just don’t find elsewhere. The folks at Buena Vista expect to raise and release sails every day of the year, with clients averaging over a dozen sailfish releases per day during high season.

But it doesn’t begin and end with sailfish. Blue marlin and black marlin are present (if not in the same concentration as sails), while dorado, roosterfish and tuna are also found here in abundance.

The facilities

Buena Vista Sportfishing Lodge is located on the island of Buena Vista near the port town of Iztapa, just 60 miles south of the capital, Guatemala City. It features air-conditioned rooms furnished with queen beds, a pool, outdoor bar featuring satellite TV and a waterfront restaurant.

The lodge is fully staffed with English and Spanish-speaking personnel – American manager Robert Fallon is an experienced Guatemalan fishing guide and 11-year resident of Guatemala.
