Tucked away in a quiet spot just outside Rosslare Harbour, this 18th-century manor house is the perfect base for anyone looking to explore the myriad bass fishing marks of Ireland’s south-east coast. With two wings sleeping up to six people and very reasonable rates, it’s an ideal option for groups of anglers or families. Owner Jamie Ryan is an excellent fisherman in his own right and a mine of information regarding fishing round these parts.

The fishing

Ballytrent’s location in Rosslare Harbour makes it the perfect jump-off point for the travelling bass fisherman. There are innumerable bays, coves, wide-open beaches and rocky headlands and nearly all of them are home to decent numbers of fish. The fabled bass grounds of the Copper Coast (stretching from Tramore to Dungarvan) are within easy reach, too – you could spend a lifetime exploring this area and never unlock all its secrets.

Lure fishing around here is particularly effective – the craggy, rock-studded coastline makes for the ideal bass habitat, but it also has a habit of gobbling up tackle if you’re not careful. Fortunately, the bass will happily hit top-water lures (poppers, walk-the-dog-styles and Patchinkos being particularly effective), while soft plastics such as Xlayers and Slug-Gos fished weedless also account for plenty of fish. When conditions allow, fly-fishing is hugely effective, with clousers and deceivers doing the business.

Your best bet is to hire a car, print off a tide table, get out and explore. And if you need some advice on where to fish, owner Jamie will happily point you in the right direction, or you could make use of one of the excellent fishing guides working in the area. If you’re planning a fishing trip to south-east Ireland, you couldn’t do much better. Jamie is the consummate host and the scenery round here is spectacular. A bunch of us were there in August – weather did us no favours and the fishing was unusually tough. We were just unlucky though – when everything comes together, this place is an A1 bass fishery. Already making plans for a trip next year.
The house itself is perfect for groups of travelling fishermen – there were six of us and this place was a proper home from home. Barbecues at night, space for our gear (plenty of that) and all the amenities you’ll need. Big thanks to Jamie for all the hospitality.
