Like Long Key to the north, Bahia Honda State Park is a great option for the budget-minded travelling fisherman, with camping available for $36 per night, and access to some of the Florida Keys’ best DIY bonefishing. The park is home to expansive flats on the oceanside, and some decent bottom/spin fishing around the bridge.

The fishing

This is one of the best spots for DIY bonefishing in the Florida Keys. Like Long Key, there are wide-ranging flats on the oceanside where you can find big bonefish and the occasional permit. The fishing is not easy of course (it seldom is in free-access venues where the fish are used to flies and liable to seek more tranquil waters when the tourist hordes arrive). But it’s a worthwhile challenge – this area has produced some excellent sport over the years. Early mornings are best, before the swimmers and boaters arrive.

The Bahia Honda area is also a magnet for tarpon fishermen – you’ll need either a boat or a skipper (there are plenty of charters operating in the area) to get to the bridges where they hang out, but from May onwards, this is ground zero for tarpon action.

For something a little different, the area near the old bridge towards the southern end of the park is worth a look – snapper, jacks, cudas, mackerel and grouper are all a possibility.

The facilities

There are three separate camping areas within the site: Buttonwood, Sandspur and Bayside. Buttonwood (sites 1-48) can accommodate a variety of camping rigs from large RVs to small tents, Sandspur (sites 49-72) is located in a hardwood hammock provides small sites suitable for tents, and Bayside (sites 73-80) is the smallest campground with only eight sites.

Canoes and kayaks are available to rent, and there’s a shop selling sandwiches, snacks, ice, T-shirts, souvenirs and snorkeling equipment. Limited grocery and marine supplies are also available.
