A small beachfront residence in sleepy Punta Allen, Ascension Bay Bonefish Club caters for six anglers at a time, with spacious, comfy lodgings, authentic local food and access to some of the finest saltwater flats fishing in the Caribbean. Bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook are the big four, with supplementary action from barracuda and jacks along the way.

The fishing

Fishing from its fleet of 21’ custom fiberglass pangas, the ABBC guiding operation is rightly renowned for its professionalism and repeated success. Unusually, the lodge uses two guides per boat – a senior guide handles the poling and the other stands with the angler to point out the fish. The flats themselves are a mixture of hard-bottomed sand flats (perfect for wading) and others dotted with patches of turtle grass.

All the flats favorites are plentiful in the waters around ABBC, and anglers have a realistic chance at a grand slam (bonefish, tarpon and permit in one day) or a super slam (the same but with a snook thrown in). The bonefish are plentiful if not huge (averaging 2-3lbs) but permit provide the stiffest, and probably most exciting challenge. The guides here are proud of their permit fishing record and have perfected the art of wading for them. Guides will help you out of the boat into waist-deep water and wade with you into the perfect casting position. Fish regularly top 30lbs here.

Fall months are prime time for tarpon (although there are plenty of baby tarpon present year round) and hard-fighting snook can be found huddled against the mangroves when conditions are right.

The facilities

The club accommodates up to six anglers at any one time. Bedrooms are spacious and well ventilated, with overhead fans, A/C and electricity. A full bathroom with hot-water shower is standard for each bedroom (some en suite, others are located just across a narrow hallway). All have views of the Caribbean.

Food is a mixture of American dishes and Mexican/Caribbean favorites, with hearty portions and fresh local ingredients the order of the day. Boxed lunches are prepared for the fishing days and typically include sandwiches, fruit, desserts, iced water and other beverages. Bottled water is used for drinking and ice.
